The Citizen Watch Co. was founded in 1924, and was so named by its founding father so it would be "Close to the hearts of People Everywhere." In 1924, Citizens forerunner, the Shokosha Watch Research Watch Institute produced its first pocket watch the "CITIZEN".
The then Mayor of Tokyo, Mr Shimpei Goto, named the watch "CITIZEN" with the hope that the watch, a luxury item of those times, would become widely available to ordinary citizens and be sold throughout the world.
The Citizen Watch Company, Ltd. was established in 1930.Citizen is the worlds largest watch company. More people depend on a watch made by Citizen than other timepiece. Citizen produced 292 million timepieces in 1999, about 24% of the world total.
